About the Balmoral Hotel: The Balmoral, meaning “majestic dwelling” in Gaelic, officially opened its doors 120 years ago on October 15, 1902, as the North British Station Hotel. The hotel’s roots were quite literally in the railway, with a dedicated entrance from Waverley Station to the hotel. The iconic clock tower is famously set three minutes fast, so travelers won’t miss their trains – a tradition which has remained to this day with the exception of Hogmanay for the city’s New Year’s Eve Street Party, and 2021 in order to end that year of Covid just a wee bit sooner!
Number One is a 4 AA Rosette Restaurant where modern Scottish cuisine meets world-class service, while Brasserie Prince, celebrates the very best of Scottish produce with classic French cooking, serving seasonally inspired, classic bistro dishes that harmonize quintessentially French flavors with local ingredients.
Notable guests at the Balmoral have included Laurel and Hardy, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Paul and Linda McCartney, the Queen Mother, Oprah Winfrey, Tom Hanks, and in 2006, J.K. Rowling who wrote for 6 months in Room 552 to conclude her Harry Potter series - the culmination of 17 years of writing.
About the Gleneagles Resort: In the early 1900s, during the era of ‘Grand Hotels,’ General Manager of the Caledonian Railway Company, Donald Matheson, enamored by the countryside, envisioned a large country house hotel that would attract people to come and enjoy the great outdoors and the beauty of the Scottish Highlands. He would give this project his utmost attention, and spare nothing in making this hotel the “eighth wonder of the world.”
During this era playing golf was considered to be the height of fashion, so Matheson commissioned two courses for the Hotel, one named the King’s and the other the Queen’s Course. Set on 850 acres, in 1921 Gleneagles made sporting history when it hosted the first international match between American and British professional golfers - the precursor to The Ryder Cup. Today, Gleneagles is a 5-Star luxury resort and the Virtuoso Best of the Best Awards: World Hotel of the Year 2022 offering falconry, shooting, 4x4 offroad driving, archery, croquet, tennis, horse riding, a ferret school, a world class spa and, of course, golf.
About The Royal Yacht Britannia: Launched in 1953 by Queen Elizabeth II, she was built by the John Brown & Company shipyard in Clydebank, Scotland and was the 83rd Royal Yacht, a tradition begun by Charles II in 1660. In later years, Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton would each step aboard. Charles and Diana took their honeymoon cruise on Britannia in 1981. Bon voyage!
